Herne Bay Beach Processes and Sea Defences Field Trip
In October 2003 Year 8 visited Herne Bay, North Kent to carry out a Cost Benefit Analysis of the sae defences and to look for evidence of Longshore Drift and constructive / destructive beach pricesses, which include counting waves and carrying out a beach profile using clinometers, ranging poles and tape. Below are some of the photographs taken of year 8 in action:
 |
Year 8 carrying out a beach transect to ascertain whether the beach was convex (constructive) or concave (destructive).
Our results showed the beach to be broadly convex, but makedly conacve at the shoreline where the waves were desructive and removing the beach material through LONGSHORE DRIFT. |
 |
This time Year 8 were following the progress of an orange thrown into the sea to sea how far it moved and in which direction, thereby proving that there was longshore drift in Herne Bay, North Kent. |

Pupils are carefully lining up the clinometer with the lines on the ranging poles. When an alignment has been reached, the trigger on the clinometer is released and a readuing showing a change in angle can be taken. |
